About Stuttgart

Stuttgart is both the capital and the biggest city of Baden-Württemberg, a German state. It lies in a fertile valley beside the Neckar called the Stuttgarter Kessel, or Stuttgart Cauldron, among hills, some covered in vineyards, and parks. The 2023 population was 613,111, the sixth largest of any city in Germany. Duke Liudolf of Swabia founded it in 950 as a stud farm to breed warhorses, and the name comes from the Old High German Stuotgarten. It received a charter in 1320, and from the 15th century to 1918 the House of Württemberg ruled from here as the capital of its county, duchy and kingdom.

The city's royal past shows in castles in the suburbs and beyond: Castle Solitude in Baroque and Rococo style, built between 1700 and 1800, and Ludwigsburg Palace, a Baroque palace of 1704 to 1758 with an enormous Baroque garden. Other landmarks include the classical Castle Rosenstein of 1822 to 1830, the Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Gardens from 1853, and the Weissenhof Estate of 1927 in the International Style. The TV Tower was the first TV tower in the world built of concrete. Allied air raids devastated the city and its automobile production in World War II, yet by 1952 it had recovered.
