About Quebec City
Quebec City is the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec and its second-largest city, after Montreal. In July 2021 the city counted 549,459 residents, and its census metropolitan area counted 839,311. On July 3, 1608, the explorer Samuel de Champlain established the French settlement that became the city. The name comes from the Algonquin Kébec, meaning "where the river narrows." The British captured Quebec in 1759, and in 1763 France gave up New France, the city included, to Britain. Old Quebec's ramparts are the only surviving fortified city walls in the Americas north of Mexico.
Old Quebec, inside and beneath the fortifications, holds a large share of the notable traditional architecture in the city, and its stone buildings and winding streets give it a European feel. Stairways and the Old Quebec Funicular connect the upper and lower town. Place Royale, a small square surrounded by stone buildings, is where Champlain founded the city in 1608. The Château Frontenac, perched on Cap-Diamant, dominates the skyline; architect Bruce Price designed it for the Canadian Pacific Railway company, one in a series of hotels in the château style. Notre-Dame de Québec Cathedral was the first New World church elevated to basilica status.
