About Winnipeg

Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba, Canada, and its largest city. It is centered where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, and it was home to 749,607 people in 2021, with a metropolitan population of 834,678. Fort Rouge, the first fort on the site, was built by French traders in 1738. Settlers from Lord Selkirk's Red River Colony founded a settlement there in 1812, and its core became the City of Winnipeg when it was incorporated in 1873. Winnipeg, a railway and transportation hub, goes by the nickname "Gateway to the West," and it developed rapidly after the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in 1881.

The city has 236 neighborhoods. Downtown, its financial and economic core, sits around Portage Avenue and Main Street and spans roughly 2.6 square kilometers (1.0 sq mi). The Exchange District is named for the area's first grain exchange, in operation between 1880 and 1913. This 30-block district became a National Historic Site of Canada in 1997 and holds the most extensive collection in North America of terracotta and cut stone buildings from the early 20th century. The Winnipeg Walkway links many major downtown buildings, and Osborne Village is the city's most densely populated neighborhood.
