About Boston

Boston is the capital and largest city of Massachusetts, and a financial and cultural center for New England, a region in the Northeastern United States. The 2020 census counted 675,647 residents, which ranked it third by population among cities of the Northeastern United States, behind New York City and Philadelphia. English Puritan settlers founded it on Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 and named it after the market town of Boston in Lincolnshire, England. Several key events of the American Revolution took place there, among them the Boston Massacre in 1770, the Boston Tea Party in 1773 and the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.

Boston began on the Shawmut Peninsula. During the siege of 1775–1776, Boston Neck was only about 100 feet wide, which hampered a frontal assault by George Washington. After independence the city grew well past that original peninsula, filling in land and also annexing neighboring towns. Boston Common (1634) was the first public park in the nation, Boston Latin School (1635) its first public school, and the Tremont Street subway (1897) its first subway system.
