About Columbus
Columbus is Ohio's capital and its most populous city, and the seat of Franklin County. It had 905,748 residents at the 2020 census, ranking 14th among U.S. cities by population. The area began as a group of Native American settlements beside the Scioto River, and Franklinton, the first European settlement, dates from 1797. Columbus was founded in 1812 where the Scioto and Olentangy rivers meet. Its central location made it the planned state capital, and it officially became the capital in 1816. During the 19th century it grew into a hub for transportation and industry, served by the National Road, the Ohio and Erie Canal and a number of railroads.
The city counts more than 170 notable buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places and keeps its own register with 82 entries. The Brewery District, German Village, Italian Village and Victorian Village are four historic districts it maintains outside that register. The Ohio Statehouse was begun in 1839 on a 4 ha (10-acre) plot, which became Capitol Square, a site outside the city's original layout. The Statehouse is built of Columbus limestone and rests on foundations 5.5 m (18 feet) deep. Eddie Rickenbacker's original home in the Driving Park district, built in 1895, received National Historic Landmark status in 1976.
