About Denver
Denver is Colorado's capital and most populous city, and formally a consolidated city and county. It had 715,522 residents at the 2020 census. It lies in the valley of the South Platte River, on the High Plains' western edge, just east of the Rockies' Front Range. The city was founded during the Gold Rush era, in 1858, and is named for James W. Denver, then the Kansas Territory's governor. Its elevation is officially exactly one mile above sea level, 1609.344 meters (5280 feet), hence the nickname the Mile High City.
In 1858 William Larimer staked a claim on the bluff above the point where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River and named the townsite Denver City. On June 24, 1870, the Denver Pacific linked the city to the transcontinental railroad, and wealthy residents paid for major commercial, cultural and residential buildings. The Leadville mining entrepreneur Horace Tabor put up a commercial block at 16th and Larimer along with the Tabor Grand Opera House. Hotels, among them the Brown Palace Hotel, were built too, and large mansions rose at 11th and Pennsylvania. Denver Union Station lies on the 105th meridian, the longitude that anchors the Mountain Time Zone.
