About Perth
Perth, called Boorloo in Nyungar, is the largest city of Western Australia and its capital, and it ranks fourth in Australia by population, with over 2.2 million people in 2023. By certain criteria, no other major city in the world is more isolated. The city grew outward from the first British settlements along the Swan River, which is where its central business district and the port of Fremantle sit. Captain James Stirling founded Perth in 1829 as the administrative center of the Swan River Colony, and Queen Victoria proclaimed it a city in 1856.
Some of the oldest buildings in Perth date to the 1830s, among them the Old Court House in the central city, Fremantle's Round House, and the Old Mill at South Perth. Murray Street and Hay Street, the focus of retail shopping in the central business district, run as pedestrian malls from William Street to Barrack Street, and Forrest Place, another pedestrian mall, links Murray Street to Wellington Street and the railway station. Kings Park, at 400.6 hectares (990 acres), ranks among the largest inner-city parks in the world and holds the DNA Tower, a double helix staircase 15 m (49 ft) high.
